Centres for the Open Protection of the Elderly (K.A.P.I.)
KAPI (Centres for the Open Protection of the Elderly) first appeared in Greece in 1979, when the Directorate for the Protection of the Elderly of the Ministry of Health and Welfare invited the Volunteer Group and asked for its cooperation in the creation of an experimental Centre for the Open Protection of the Elderly. In the years that followed, KAPI spread throughout the country. By the end of 1981, 8 KAPI were operating with voluntary organizations as operators. Since 1982, the KAPI have been transferred to Local Government and have functioned as Legal Entities under Public Law (N.P.D.D.). Until the end of 1988, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, through the Directorate for the Protection of the Elderly, covered salary and operating costs of the KAPI, and if municipalities had an orthopaedic unit, it also subsidised the construction of a building for the KAPI. Since 1989, municipalities and communities have been required to bear salary and operating costs.
In the Municipality of Corinth, the first KAPI was opened in July 1999 in the city of Corinth, followed by others, which today amount to thirteen (13) in total.
Their purpose is:
The prevention of biological, psychological and social problems of older people so that they remain equal and active members of society.
The information and cooperation of the community and specialised bodies on the problems and needs of the elderly.
