Description
To change the surname of a citizen who is registered in the Municipal Registers of the Municipality of Chania must come o himself.
Through this procedure, Greek citizens can:
1) To change their Greek surname, if the conditions required by law are met, which are the mental problems caused by surnames:
a) badly pronounced,
b) causing anger or contempt,
c) difficult to pronounce,
d) of bad reputation as a result of another person’s actions,
e) contrary to society’s notions of morality.
2) To change their foreign surname to Greek.
3) To change their surname or first name (only for expatriates).
What do I need?
1)Application form – (to be completed at our office)
2) A declaration of responsibility (to be completed at our Service)
3) Photocopy of your identity card
4)Government tax 15,00 euros (from any tax office)
5) Birth Certificate (only if the citizen was born abroad)

I need to know
1) All types of certificates, as well as civil registry acts can be searched ex officio by the service under the provisions of Law 3242/2OO4 and Law 3448/2006 “on ex officio search” as long as the events have taken place in Greece (marriages, births, deaths). The ex officio search does not apply to acts concerning the Special Registry of Athens.
2) If a third person comes to the service with authorization, the Declaration must have the authentic signature of the person he/she represents.
3) The following must be written in the text of the declaration:
“There has been no other change in my personal data. I have not been prosecuted or brought to trial. I am submitting this statement to change my last name from “……….” to “…….”.”
