Ecological Schools

Reducing my ecological footprint at home and at school

The Eco-Schools programme is the largest in the world for sustainable school management. It starts in the classroom, engages the school community in sustainability education activities and extends to the local community. To achieve this, we need teachers who are ecologically concerned and want to help their students for a better future, want to educate them with a love for a cleaner environment.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness, educate and change the attitudes of students on environmental issues through participatory processes in decision-making, planning and implementation of actions, so that schools become communities of sustainable living together on a pedagogical and practical level. This is achieved through the formulation and implementation of the “Eco-Code” – a set of rules of environmental behaviour – as well as the implementation of an environmental Action Plan concerning the school environment and its transformation into a clean, beautiful, humane and friendly place. The five main themes of the Programme are: Water, Energy , Waste, Schoolyard and Sustainable School.

Actions

The values of the “Eco-Schools” programme were presented to the Directors of the Municipality of Korinthia, at the Town Hall, on 25/10/2022 by Mrs. Dr. Dimitra Daniel Skondra , who is a chemist and a volunteer in the Municipality of Corinth

Ms. Daniel together with Mr. Π. Sakellarakis, Advisor to the Mayor on Education, visited all the candidate “eco-schools” of the Municipality, talked with the teachers about any problems that may arise in the buildings, the courtyards, the toilets, the surrounding areas and their evacuation in case of emergency. Instructions were given on the programme and the seven steps required to complete it, while the priorities that each school will set and the guidelines for addressing the problems were discussed.

Indicatively, it is mentioned that the Municipality of Korinthia in cooperation with the Department of Autopesthesia provided a solution to a problem of soundproofing of classrooms, showing that good cooperation and excellent coordination can provide immediate solutions and results.

As part of the Programme, Ms. Daniel contributed to the initiatives of the Municipality of Corinth, regarding water scarcity and the proper management of water, with activities to raise students’ awareness of this important resource. Through presentations in schools, students learned that water is a small chemical substance but unique to our life, our nature, agriculture, animals and everything on our earth. They learned about the forms of water, the water cycle, how little drinking water there is on earth, how many people on the planet don’t have water and how we have to take care of it to have it.

The message of these actions was that if we understand the importance of water, maybe then we can start treating it with the respect it deserves.

We would like to thank for the cooperation the principals and teachers of the schools : D/S Xylokerizas -Aristotelio High School and Primary School, D/S Ag. Vasileiou, High School of Chiliomodi, D/S Perigialiou, 1st D/S, 3rd D/S of Corinth
